The Special Court for CBI Cases, Chandigarh, has sentenced two accused—Ram Chander Meena, former DSP of Chandigarh Police, and Aman Grover, a private individual—to 4 to 7 years of Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) along with a total fine of ₹1.2 lakh in connection with a ₹70 lakh bribery case.
Sentencing Details:
- Ram Chander Meena, former DSP of Chandigarh Police: 7 years RI with a ₹1 lakh fine.
- Aman Grover, private individual: 4 years RI with a ₹20,000 fine.
Case Background:
The CBI registered the case on 13 August 2015, alleging that private individuals had demanded a ₹70 lakh bribe on behalf of then DSP and then Sub-Inspector (SI) of Chandigarh Police. The bribe was meant to prevent the arrest of the complainant’s parents in a case under investigation by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW), Chandigarh.
CBI Trap and Arrest:
- The CBI laid a trap and caught the accused private individuals red-handed on 13 August 2015 while accepting ₹40 lakh in cash and a postdated cheque of ₹30 lakh from the complainant.
- The bribe was being collected on behalf of the accused police officials.
Trial and Conviction:
- The CBI filed a chargesheet on 9 October 2015 in the Special CBI Court, Chandigarh.
- During the trial, the accused SI passed away, leading to the abatement of proceedings against him.
- On the previous day, the Court found Ram Chander Meena and Aman Grover guilty, and they were sentenced today.
Current Status:
The convicted individuals will now serve their respective sentences as per the Court’s ruling.
