Delhi Govt to Fine Vehicles Without Colour Coded Stickers to identify Petrol, Diesel Vehicles

Delhi Government to Fine Vehicles Without Colour-Coded Stickers

The Delhi Transport Department has announced that it will soon start penalizing vehicle owners who do not have colour-coded stickers on their vehicles. These stickers help identify the type of fuel a vehicle uses and are part of the High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) system.

What Are Colour-Coded Stickers?

These stickers are placed on the front windshield of the vehicle. They are used to indicate whether a vehicle runs on petrol, diesel, or CNG. The colours are:

  • 🔶 Orange – for Diesel vehicles
  • 🔷 Light Blue – for Petrol and CNG vehicles
  • âš« Grey – for other types of vehicles

These stickers are important for both traffic management and pollution control in Delhi.

Why Are These Stickers Important?

The stickers are a part of the High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) system, which was introduced in 2012-2013. The Delhi government made it mandatory for all new vehicles from April 2019 and later required all old vehicles to get them as well.

If your vehicle does not have these stickers, it is considered a violation of traffic rules under the Motor Vehicle Act.

What Happens If You Don’t Have the Sticker?

As per the Motor Vehicles (High Security Registration Plates) Order, 2018, if your vehicle is found without the sticker, you may face a fine under Section 192(1) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

This section deals with vehicles being used without proper registration or in violation of registration laws. According to transport officials, if you are caught violating this rule, you could be fined up to Rs 5,000.

No PUC Certificate Without Stickers

One more important thing to note is that vehicles without these stickers will not be issued a PUC (Pollution Under Control) certificate. This certificate is necessary for driving legally in Delhi and proves that your vehicle is not polluting the environment beyond allowed limits.

Previous Action by the Transport Department

Back in 2020, the Delhi Transport Department had also launched a special campaign to check vehicles without HSRP and colour-coded stickers. Many vehicle owners were fined during this drive.

What Should Vehicle Owners Do?

If you own a vehicle in Delhi, make sure:

  • You have an HSRP number plate installed
  • The correct colour-coded sticker is affixed on your vehicle’s windshield
  • You regularly renew your PUC certificate

Following these rules will help you avoid penalties and also contribute to cleaner air and better traffic management in Delhi.
