Poonam Gupta appointed as New Deputy Governor of RBI


The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed Poonam Gupta as Deputy Governor ahead of its bi-monthly monetary policy committee meeting, scheduled for April 7-9, 2025.

Gupta currently serves as the Director General of the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) and is a member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister. She also convenes the Advisory Council to the 16th Finance Commission.

With nearly two decades of experience in senior roles at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank in Washington, D.C., Gupta joined NCAER in 2021. She has also held teaching positions at the Delhi School of Economics, the University of Maryland (USA), and as a visiting faculty member at the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Delhi.

Her academic contributions include serving as the RBI Chair Professor at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) and as a Professor at the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER).

Gupta is a board member at NIPFP and the Global Development Network (GDN) and is part of the World Bank’s advisory groups on ‘Poverty & Equity’ and the ‘World Development Report.’ She also serves on NITI Aayog’s Development Advisory Committee and the Executive Committee of FICCI. During India’s G20 Presidency, she chaired the Task Force on Macroeconomics and Trade.

At NCAER, she has led research on economic growth, international finance, central banking, macroeconomic stability, public debt, and state finances.

Gupta holds a PhD and a Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Maryland, USA, as well as a Master’s in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi. She received the 1998 EXIM Bank Award for her doctoral work in international economics.

She will succeed Michael Patra as Deputy Governor of the RBI.
